Over-Engineering
This leather duffle bag doesn’t have a single breakable part. No zippers, velcro, magnets, snaps or buttons. And it’s built out of just one single solid piece of leather so there are hardly any seams. There is not another leather overnight bag with fewer seams. The reason we don’t like seams is because each hole is actually the start of a tear and so the more tears the more likelihood that it’s going to fall apart one day. And to minimize that chance of tearing even more, we only put 5 stitches per inch so there is more leather between each hole. A sewing machine is a perforation machine and so it’s not good to have the holes too close together. And then to top it all off, we reinforce each stress point with hidden polyester strapping and rivets.

Materials
Our cow leather is the strongest we can find. It’s called full-grain leather. I’ll quickly explain leather as if it were a roof. The bottom part is plywood, then tar paper and then the toughest part, the shingles. Leather has the flesh part at the bottom, then the middle part is the corium and then the top part is the grain. The grain is the toughest, tightest and most water-resistant part of the hide and so we leave it all on there. Cheaper leather overnight bags are made with leather that has had the grain removed. They either split it off and sell it to high-quality companies so the low-quality ones can have a perfect piece of leather with no scars or flaws. That way they don’t have to cut around any scars and throw that expensive leather in the trash. I call that leather Neutered Leather. All of the tough strong protective fibers are gone. It’s like taking the shingles off of the roof.

Then we sew it together with really thick and strong industrial-grade polyester thread. It’s the same thread they sew parachutes, sails and quality work boots with. The cheaper nylon thread deteriorates when the sun hits it, but polyester doesn’t. Inside the leather travel bag is a removable pigskin lined liner. The pigskin is actually a stronger leather than the cowskin.

One of the highlights of the materials here is our custom 316 Stainless Steel. It’s not just stainless steel, it’s the good stainless steel. If you look it up online, you’ll be super impressed. Our clasps are rated to hold a bag of up to 750 lbs. of cats. If you put another one in, the whole bag drops. No good. It’s the kind of metal when your life depends on it.

Functionality
The One Piece Leather Duffle Bag comes with a built-in handle to grab it when it’s open and then a sewn-on handle to lift it when it’s rolled or folded closed. It can be rolled or folded over to whatever height is needed or left open to be used as a tote. The three straps can be pulled tight to compress it small. When the top is rolled, it becomes pretty watertight. Please don’t challenge us on that by submerging it filled with your camera gear. It’s very water-resistant, but not waterproof. And then to top it off, the strap has a hole at the very tip, just in case you want to way overstuff it.

A nice bedtime story to help you sleep

I was in a little Tunisian medina on the edge of the Sahara, when I saw it, an old old leather satchel, and it was for sale. It was absolutely the coolest bag I’d ever laid me eyes on. Not only because of the gorgeous patina of the aged leather, but because of the design. It was made of only one solid piece of leather, folded around and sewn to itself. The top folded over and that’s what closed it. With all of the blowing sand and dust in the desert, it’s a super common design because it perfectly keeps the blowing sand and dust out. Of course, being from London, I was thinking that it would perfectly keep the water out. So I says to myself, “Dave, that’s so cool, you’ve got to make something like this one day.” And then I did something that I still regret to this day. I mean, I really don’t have many regrets in life, but this is one of the big ones. I put that bag back down on the table and walked away. Why didn’t I buy it?!!! Ahhhhh!!! I’m so stupid and it bothers me to even write this because it’s bringing up the pain again. But anyways, that bag is what inspired this one, As I got more into picture taking, I bought a nicer camera and some lenses, and thought, “You know, it’s time to make that one bag that’s dustproof and keeps things dry.” And voila! Out popped this bag. It’s first name was The Dry Bag and then I changed it to the Leather Overnight Bag, but now we’ve settled on a solid name for it. The One Piece Leather Duffle Bag. Ta daaah.
